Doster's Southern fiction and non-fiction works focus on his home state of Georgia. Jesus Tree is inspired by the real-life murder of a pastor during the Depression Era. Rose Bush is a love story unfolding amidst small-town politics and environmental issues. Shadow Child is a series of interconnected short stories centered on historical St. Simons Island, a Georgia barrier island. Georgia Witness is a non-fiction window into the past as seen through the eyes of people across the state who helped shape Georgia into what it is today - a land of opportunity. In addition to these newer works, he has published Lord Baltimore, a Pulitzer-nominated novel, and Voices From St. Simons, interviews with descendants of slaves and slave-owners who still live in the area.
