"Before It’s Gone: Preserving Georgia’s Cultural Experiences in the Digital Age”
Thursday, November 15, 2012, 6:00 PM
St. Simons Island, Georgia
Historians have always made use of new technology to document the past. However, the tools available to do this have significantly evolved in the last decade. Doster’s talk, “Before It’s Gone: Preserving Georgia’s Cultural Experiences in the Digital Age,” examines ways the Internet, social media, and digital devices are changing how historical data is documented and distributed. Part of the presentation will focus on traditional methods of historical preservation and the new technologies archaeologists and historians use to capture and disseminate their findings. He will also discuss the role of oral history in preserving the past, and he will talk about his new book, Georgia Witness: A Contemporary Oral History of the State. More significantly, Mr. Doster will discuss ways anyone can use digital technology tools to document and preserve his or her local and family history.
